Tidbits about the Portuguese Language
Portuguese is used mainly in Portugal and Brazil. Portugal has a population of around 10 million but Brazil has approximately 195 million people so there are more Portuguese speakers in South America.
There were a number of words which are spelled differently in Portugal and Brazil but the Portuguese government passed a bill to change the orthography of their Portuguese to match Brazil in May of 2008 so both forms of Portuguese are becoming more similar.
In addition to Portugal and Brazil, Portuguese is also an official language of the African countries of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Principe, Mozambique and Equatorial Guinea along with the Asian countries of East Timor and Macau. There are around 250 million native speakers of Portuguese across multiple continents. It is also an official language of the European Union.
The first documented European language in which the Japanese had contact with is said to be Portuguese from the Portuguese landing on Tanegashima Island when firearms were introduced to Japan. Afterwards, Portuguese terms such as capa (rain coat), button, tobacco, pan (bread), bolo (small round cookie), konpeito (sugary candy), carta (playing cards) and tutanaga (galvanized iron) started to be used in the Japanese language.
Presently, languages such as English have taken a more influential position than Portuguese so not many Portuguese terms are being incorporated into Japanese. However, there have been a few terms such as the soccer term volante (defensive midfielder) and the musical terms samba and bossa nova which come from Portuguese.
The Spanish language of neighboring Spain is the most similar language to Portuguese. Contact JOHO for Spanish translation services as well.
